Cardiac stories

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death in Alberta – help us change that

Imagine a world where heart attacks are rare. Where cardiovascular disease is as easy to treat as a papercut. Heart attacks are a thing of the past.

That is the world the University Hospital Foundation (UHF) is working towards. It is the inspiration behind Heart Month. This year, we are excited to welcome back Freson Bros. as the presenting sponsor of Heart Month. Family owned and operated since 1955, Freson Bros. is dedicated to providing Albertans with the freshest food, convenient options, and healthy choices.

One of the first

When Susan Juchli was nine years old, heart surgery was still rare, experimental, and frightening — especially for children. Few families had ever heard of a child surviving open-heart surgery, let alone going on to live a full, ordinary life.

Susan did.

She thought It was the stairs

When Deb Hoekstra began avoiding stairs in the fall of 2020, she didn’t think she was facing a medical emergency. She thought she was being sensible.

“I looked at the half-flight of stairs into my office and thought, I’ll go around — no stairs,” Deb recalls. “That wasn’t like me at all.”

Taking the lead on Alberta’s comprehensive cardiac strategy

Heart disease remains one of Alberta’s leading causes of death and adds to the province’s most pressing healthcare costs. Yet, there is currently no coordinated strategy to address it.

That’s about to change.

Heart failure couldn't stop him

Bassit Nawaz’s life took an unexpected turn just before his 21st birthday. On a camping trip with friends, Bassit began to feel nauseous and sick. His symptoms didn’t subside at home.

The heart of a fighter

Healthy and active, Jenna didn’t know what hit her when she was told she had heart disease. Left with no other option, she went under the knife for open heart surgery.
