Join us this February for Heart Month, presented by Freson Bros. – our month-long fundraising campaign in support of cardiac research and care here in Alberta.
This year, Heart Month is focused on supporting projects such as upgrading the cardiac hybrid operating room at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, a highly specialized space where the most complex heart procedures take place.
February holds a very special place in the hearts of everyone at the University Hospital Foundation, and in the hearts of countless Canadians across western and northern Canada. As Heart Month, it is a time when love, community and gratitude come together in support of life-saving cardiac care at the Maz and beyond.
Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada, but the University Hospital Foundation is working to change that, with your help. Generous support from people like you makes leading-edge research and innovation possible and helps ensure the Maz remains the groundbreaking centre it is today. Your support saves lives.
One of North America’s leading heart institutes, the Maz performs more than 5,000 potentially life-saving procedures each year for patients from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. It is also the only centre in Northern Alberta providing advanced care for patients with cardiac and respiratory failure.
Built for the most critical moments in cardiac care
At the University of Alberta Hospital’s Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, the cardiac hybrid operating room is where the most complex heart cases are treated. It brings cardiologists and surgeons together in one space, using advanced imaging to deliver less invasive care with fewer complications and faster recovery.
Demand for hybrid procedures is growing quickly, but the technology in this room is aging. This year, Heart Month support will help fund many critical advancements in cardiac care, including upgrades so the Maz can treat more patients, more efficiently, when they need it most.
The Maz offers care to any age at any stage, serving patients from across western and northern Canada
Nearly 1,500 adult and 450 pediatric open heart surgeries are performed each year at the Maz
1 in 4 Canadians will experience some form of heart disease in their lifetime
